Meet the teacher: Mrs. Sharon A. Gibbs

Mrs. Sharon Gibbs joined the faculty of Shelter Island School in September of 2000 as part of the middle school team. Before joining the faculty at Shelter Island, she was a faculty member of the Riverhead High School Science Department.  Currently Mrs. Gibbs is part of the Shelter Island School’s MST House for grades 6-12. The courses she currently teaches include Science 6, Science 7, Science 7 Honors, 8th Grade Intermediate Science & New York State Physical Setting: Earth Science course for regents credit.   Sharon also served as the Science Fair Coordinator through 2015. Other courses taught during her tenure have included 5th Grade Reading, 5th Grade Science and 5th Grade Study Skills.  Sharon also has an instructional background with environmental science.

Sharon is a proud member of the Shelter Island community and has strong family ties to Shelter Island.  Sharon is a Class of 1986 Graduate of Shelter Island School, Valedictorian.  She attended the State University of New York College at Cortland from the fall of 1986 to the summer of 1993 earning an undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology and a Masters of Art in Teaching Science.  Sharon also holds New York State Teacher Certifications in Biology 5-12 and Earth Science/General Science 5-12. 

Sharon is married to her high school sweet heart, Jeffrey.  They are the very proud parents of their adult daughter Emily. Sharon is dedicated to teaching outdoor education and has taught at The Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve as a volunteer teacher for many summers as part of the Preserve’s environmental education program.   Mrs. Gibbs loves to collect rocks, walk/hike, take bike rides and go swimming at the beach.
